Max Verstappen is not too worried after a difficult first day of the Grand Prix weekend in Bahrain. The Dutchman struggled with minor problems in both training sessions on Friday and finished sixth in both the first and second sessions.
“It wasn’t bad, I think it’s very close,” said 26-year-old Verstappen behind the Red Bull Racing motorhome. “Maybe some cars around us have already cranked up the engine a bit to achieve a higher top speed. We have to focus on ourselves.”
“Today there were some minor problems with the front and rear balance, but nothing earth-shattering. We have to improve the sweet spot of the car. Especially here with the heavy asphalt, once you find that sweet spot you make up for your lap time. We will focus on that tomorrow. It is not far away.”
Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton (first) and George Russell (second) were surprisingly fast during the first official day of the Grand Prix season. Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso completed the top three.
The first Grand Prix weekend of the season continues on Friday at 1:30 PM (Dutch time) with the third free practice. Qualifying is scheduled for later in the day at 5 p.m. The race starts on Saturday at 4 p.m.
