A bomb weighing more than 100 kilograms was found on the beach of Oostduinkerke on Wednesday morning. It was detonated at the waterline.
The plane bomb was found on Wednesday morning while working on the beach near the Queen Elisabeth Institute (KEI) rehabilitation hospital in Oostduinkerke, near Nieuwpoort-Bad. Near the KEI there is an old bunker from the Second World War on the beach. It is not the first time that an aircraft bomb has been found in the vicinity. This time it was a bomb weighing more than 100 kilograms.
The Dovo mine clearance service arrived on the scene and decided to detonate the bomb. The explosive was moved towards the Schipgatduinen and the police set up a large perimeter for safety. The bang could be heard far away, but some unsuspecting seagulls on the beach were particularly startled.
