Remedy Entertainment Secures Full Rights to Control Series in €17m Deal
In an exciting development for fans of the supernatural third-person shooter, Control, Remedy Entertainment has announced its acquisition of the full rights to the Control series from publisher 505 Games. The deal, valued at €17 million, grants Remedy complete control over publishing, distribution, and marketing for the franchise.
The acquisition encompasses the original game, Control, which was released in 2019, as well as the highly anticipated Control 2 and a multiplayer spin-off known as Condor. Additionally, Remedy will have the rights to all future titles within the series. This move marks a significant milestone for Remedy Entertainment, allowing them to fully explore and expand upon the captivating world they have created.
Remedy’s publishing agreement with 505 Games for Control 2 and Condor will be terminated immediately, with 505 Games continuing to serve as the publisher of Control until December 31st of this year. This transition period will ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities and allow Remedy to take full control of the franchise moving forward.
The acquisition price of approximately €17 million is equivalent to the amount that 505 Games has invested in the development of Condor and Control 2 thus far, including a minor premium. Remedy will pay the net purchase price in three cash installments over the course of the next twelve months.
This is not the first time Remedy Entertainment has made such a strategic move. In 2019, they acquired the rights to Alan Wake from Microsoft for €2.5 million. This decision proved to be a game-changer for the previously Xbox-exclusive title, as it allowed the cult classic to reach a wider audience on various platforms. The success of this move led to a remastered version and a highly anticipated sequel.
While fans eagerly await Control 2 and project Condor, both of which were announced in November 2022, it is important to note that these titles are still in development. Control 2 is currently in the “proof-of-concept” stage, as confirmed by Remedy last October. On the other hand, Condor, similar to Remedy’s successful Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes, has progressed into the production readiness stage. Although release dates have not been announced, it is clear that Remedy Entertainment is committed to delivering exceptional experiences to its dedicated fan base.
The acquisition of the full rights to the Control series by Remedy Entertainment marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey. With complete creative control over the franchise, Remedy can now fully explore the supernatural world of Control and bring their vision to life in future titles. Fans can look forward to immersive gameplay, captivating storytelling, and thrilling adventures as Remedy continues to push the boundaries of interactive entertainment.
