Strong together: IST University and the BürgerStiftung Düsseldorf promote talent
Thanks to the support of the BürgerStiftung Düsseldorf, two outstanding students from the IST University of Management have benefited from monthly support of 300 euros over a year since the 2023/2024 winter semester. This income-independent funding, which is supported equally by the federal government and the BürgerStiftung Düsseldorf, is a sign of our shared commitment to the future of young talent.
Since 2021, the IST University, in cooperation with sponsors, has been awarding the Deutschlandstipendium nationwide to students who have a good to very good grade point average and a successful standard course of study. This commitment allows students to further develop their academic achievements and professional skills without financial worries.
“For us, performance doesn’t just mean good grades; what’s more important to us is what the person behind the grades achieves,” says Prof. Dr. Matthias Johannes Bauer, expert for scholarships and matching funds. The professor of communications management continues: “That is why we also consider aspects such as volunteer activities, educational biographical hurdles and much more as criteria when selecting our scholarships.” Together with project coordinator Silke Frankenhauser, he is responsible for and organizes the Germany scholarship program at the IST University .
The official partnership with the BürgerStiftung Düsseldorf was consolidated through a meeting with Tatjana Meixner, head of the Young Adults and Scholarships department. The focus was on the exchange about common goals and the importance of academic support: “Motivated, talented, but without money – that is the reality of many young people in Düsseldorf. In order to give them the chance to use their talent, the BürgerStiftung helps with scholarships. This allows the scholarship holders to concentrate on their studies and expand their excellence. As a Citizens’ Foundation, we support young people from all areas of science. Our scholarship holders are not only among the best in their field, they are also involved in voluntary work. We as a Citizens Foundation and our scholarship providers want to promote performance and social commitment,” says Tatjana Meixner.
“Scholarship programs are an established, additional form of student financing in Germany,” explains Bauer, who also researches such programs. “Private universities like the IST often contribute to educational advancement because they often close gaps in the state higher education system. With its financial support, the BürgerStiftung Düsseldorf relieves students of some of their worries about financing their studies and careers. And in doing so, it expresses appreciation for the students’ achievements.”
Students like 22-year-old Fiona Scholtysik, who are supported by the scholarship, experience noticeable financial relief: “For me, the Deutschlandstipendium means enormous financial relief. On the one hand, I can concentrate on my studies and on the other hand, I can continue to be actively involved socially. Without the support of the program I would be much more limited. It also gives me the opportunity to come into contact with many other people who are striving to make a difference – whether it be politically, socially or in a sporting sense, for example.”
