“We are absolutely aligned with what the IMF may ask for in terms of goals and what must be done to stabilize the Argentine economythe presidential spokesperson had stated earlier, Manuel Adorniin his usual press conference at the Executive headquarters.

Manuel Adorni, Argentine presidential spokesman.

“The Government is willing to study any alternative that adds value to the agreements with the IMF and that is good for Argentina”in response to the question of whether the possibility of receiving a new disbursement from the multilateral organization is being negotiated.

The Government of the former Peronist president Alberto Fernandez (2019-2023) signed an agreement with the IMF in March 2022 to refinance the debt contracted in 2018 during the center-right mandate Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) for about $45 billion includes ten quarterly reviews.

Since Milei assumed the presidency of the country on December 10, the Fund has only had praise for the far-right politician, who set out to achieve fiscal balance this year, from the red mark of 6% of GDP that had closed in 2023.

On February 1, the IMF Executive Board approved the seventh review – the first under the Milei Government – of the extended facilities program to refinance debt, thereby granting the immediate disbursement of $4.7 billion.

The IMF board also approved extending the agreement with Argentina until December 31, 2024 and recalibrating the planned disbursements within the resource allocation of the current program.

This Wednesday, Gopinath met in the Argentine capital with the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo; with the governor of the Central Bank, Santiago Bausilli; and with the chief of staff of the Milei Government, Nicolás Posse.

“I had a productive discussion about ongoing efforts to restore macroeconomic stability, protect the vulnerable and strengthen growth prospects in Argentina”said the organization’s board in a message published on its social networks.

The IMF foresees a 2.8% drop in its economy for Argentina in 2024, according to its latest economic outlook report, published at the end of January. EFE (I)
