The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, highlighted this Monday the importance of Mexican migrant workers in the United States economy, which is why she once again called for their regularization in the neighboring country.
At a press conference, the Secretary (Minister) of Foreign Affairs said that Mexicans working in the United States contribute just over $324 billion annually, which represents an invaluable contribution to essential sectors such as agriculture, services and construction. .
“The regularization of Mexicans is not unprecedented, in 1986 3 million Mexicans were regularized,” said the official, accompanied by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
In the case of the countryside, seven out of every 10 agricultural workers in the United States are of Mexican origin, according to data from the Foreign Ministry.
Bárcena recalled that Mexico is currently asking the United States for “a similar and fair gesture” to regularize Mexican workers who have worked for more than five years in the United States, including half a million young people from the Deferred Action for Arrivals program. in Childhood (DACA).
The Mexican Government is also seeking that the United States approve a budget of 20 billion dollars annually to support poor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, as a measure to alleviate migratory flows. Mexico also requests that the United States suspend sanctions on Venezuela and end the blockade of Cuba so as not to hinder its development, in order to reduce migratory flows, the Mexican Foreign Minister said in a presentation.
Bárcena recalled that López Obrador has already presented the proposals to his American counterpart, Joe Biden, along with other measures such as regulating the sale and export of weapons from the United States to Mexico.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Mexico is one of the few countries that faces all phases of the migration cycle from origin, transit, destination and return.
There are 37.3 million Mexicans living in the United States, of which approximately 5.3 million are undocumented, according to data from the Mexican Government.
