The Füchse Berlin lost their group victory in the EHF European League. The capital club lost to Sporting CP Lisbon 28:32 (17:17) and is now second in Group IV. The rest of the group has already been decided, the group win goes to the Portuguese, who will move straight into the quarter-finals.

The Portuguese had a clear plus in goal with Leo Maciel and the top scorers of the game in Martim Costa (9) and Orri Freyr Thorkelsson (8). For the Berliners, Mathias Gidsel (6), Nils Lichtlein and Hans Lindberg (5), who came on as a seven-meter substitute, scored the most goals.
Both teams had already secured progress thanks to Dinamo Bucharest’s 33:25 win against CSM Constanta, but in a direct duel Sporting CP Lisbon and Füchse Berlin now played for group victory.
After the 31:32 the previous week, the Bundesliga team had to achieve an away win with two goals. However, the league leader from Portugal got off to a better start, raising the alarm, especially thanks to the two Costa brothers Francisco and Martim, and leading early with two goals.
Among other things, Dejan Milosavljev was able to make it 4:4 with two saved seven meters, but the capital city club sinned with its chances at the front and failed again and again because of Leo Maciel – Jaron Siewert had to take a timeout at 9:5 (14th).
Early foxes break
Berlin’s coach found the right adjustment screws, the Foxes now took advantage of their chances in the atmospheric hall, where, as is usual in football, the sporting fans chanted for more or less the entire game, regardless of what was happening in the game.
But nothing more than the interim goal was possible, after Hans Lindberg had already made a mistake from the line, Jerry Tollbring also missed a seven-meter shot. Sporting also had to distribute the forces in the backcourt, which was due to their penetration – Mathias Gidsel was able to equalize at 15:15 and they went into the break with a score of 17:17.
Berlin only took the lead once
Mathias Gidsel showed his world class at the start of the second half – the Dane once played Marsenic in the circle and then took a seven-meter shot, which Hans Lindberg converted to make it 17:19. Lasse Ludwig, who came on as a substitute during the first half, also made his first saves.
In the fight for group victory, the Berliners were ahead again for the first time – but Sporting took control of the game again with the Costa brothers. This time, even a timeout by Siewert at 22:20 (42nd) couldn’t turn the momentum around.
The Füchse lost their head in play, both Lichtlein and Gidsel committed minor offensive fouls, which Sporting then used to pull ahead to 27:24 (50th). For the last six minutes, Dejan Milosavljev moved into the post again, but the Serb couldn’t do anything with his third save of the game. Marko Kopljar was also injured when the score was 31:28 (58th).
