(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Ryu Young-seok = Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, is leaving the Seoul Gimpo Business Aviation Center (SGBAC) in Gangseo-gu, Seoul on the 27th. 2024.2.27 [공동취재] [email protected]
On this day, CEO Zuckerberg held a luncheon meeting with LG Vice Chairman Kwon Bong-seok, CEO Jo Joo-wan, and HE Business Division Head (President) Park Hyeong-se at the Twin Towers in Yeouido, Seoul, and discussed the direction of next-generation XR device collaboration and the future surrounding AI development. Possibilities of collaboration were discussed.
LG Electronics has been reviewing commercialization by establishing an XR organization under the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) for several years, and in the reorganization at the end of last year, it established a new XR business department under the HE Business Division and is accelerating the development of XR products.
CEO Jo Joo-wan previously said at the ‘CES 2024’ press conference earlier this year, “We are seeing opportunities for mixed reality (MR) and XR, starting with PC,” and “We are securing and discussing opportunities for the XR business through partnerships.” There is a bar.
According to market research firm Statista, the XR market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 36% from $29.3 billion in 2022 to $100 billion in 2026.
Meta entered the XR device market in 2014 and launched its latest MR headset, ‘Quest 3’, at the end of last year. In particular, Apple is competing fiercely in the XR device market with the recent launch of its MR headset ‘Vision Pro’.
There is also a possibility that CEO Zuckerberg will meet with Samsung Electronics executives, including Chairman Lee Jae-yong, during his visit to Korea to discuss ways to cooperate in AI semiconductors and XR business.
Meta has recently actively entered the AI technology competition, announcing that it plans to build its own general-purpose artificial intelligence (AGI) that is close to or exceeds human intelligence. To this end, the company announced plans to secure a total of 600,000 H100-class AI chips within the year, including 350,000 Nvidia H100 processors.
After unveiling its own chip called ‘MTIA’ for the first time in May last year, it recently announced plans to introduce a second-generation chip within the year.
Samsung Electronics also recently established the AGI semiconductor development organization ‘AGI Computing Lab’ in Silicon Valley, USA, to produce AGI-specific semiconductors.
Previously, during his visit to Korea in 2014, CEO Zuckerberg had a dinner meeting with then-Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong and visited Samsung Electronics’ Suwon headquarters and Hwaseong campus in succession.
In October 2022, he visited Samsung Research America in Silicon Valley, USA and met with Samsung Electronics’ Device Experience (DX) Division Head (Vice President) Jong-hee Han and Mobile Experience (MX) Division Head (President) Tae-moon Noh to discuss the development and production of XR and VR devices. Related cooperation measures have been discussed.
Meanwhile, CEO Zuckerberg entered the country through the Seoul Gimpo Business Aviation Center with his wife Priscilla Chan the night before.
Just before visiting Korea, he paid a courtesy visit to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo, then met with reporters and said, “I had a great and informative conversation with Prime Minister Kishida about the future of AI and technology.”
CEO Zuckerberg plans to pay a courtesy call on President Yoon Seok-yeol on the 29th.
