INTERNATIONAL – The entire room shouted with joy. This Monday, February 26, the New York Times reported a story that is enough to bring comfort to the heart. Following a very (very) generous donation, the medical school located in the Bronx, New York, is now free for its students. It was the result of the unexpected gesture of one of his former teachers, now 93 years old and the widow of a Wall Street financier.
“He left me, without my knowledge, an entire portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway shares”she explained to New York Timeswith the following instruction: “Do with it what you see fit.” Result: Ruth Gottesman paid a billion dollars to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Tuition costs $59,000 per year
She then explained that her donation would allow new doctors to begin their careers without having to go into debt with the medical school, and that she hopes that this donation will allow access to the faculty to those who do not They wouldn’t be able to afford to go there.
“We have excellent medical studentsbut it will open the door for many other students whose economic situation is such that they do not even consider going to medical school”, she said. Tuition at this school amounts to more than $59,000 per year, says the New York Times.
Even more, the doctors leaving the Bronx school are the most in debt in New York: half of them owe more than $200,000 after graduating. In other, more affluent districts, only 25% of medical students are affected by this level of debt.
Ruth Gottesman admitted to wondering what her late husband would have thought of her decision. “I hope he smiles and doesn’t frown,” she confided, laughing. “But he gave me the opportunity to do this, and I think he would be happy – I hope so.”
