Two men have been found guilty of the murder of Jam Master Jay, DJ of hip-hop formation Run-DMC. A jury in New York ruled that. The trial started late last month.

The then 37-year-old Jam Master Jay, whose official name was Jason Mizell, was shot dead by a masked man in a recording studio in New York in 2002. For a long time no progress was made in the case, until 2020. Then Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, the rapper’s godson and childhood friend, indicted.

The two men were arrested by American authorities in the summer of 2020. They both say they are innocent.

They allegedly dealt in drugs together at the time, with Jam Master Jay taking care of the finances. Detectives believe the trio got into an argument about this.

A third suspect was also arrested last summer, but that case has yet to start.

Still relevant

On January 30, when the trial against the two suspects began, the Dutch rapper told Brainpower in the NOS Radio 1 News what caused the murder and why Jam Master Jay is still so relevant in hip-hop after all these years.
