The Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardoand the deputy chief minister, Joseph Garciawill participate between Wednesday and Friday of this week in a series of meetings with the United Kingdom Government focused on the negotiation of the treaty to regulate the colony’s relationship with the EU after the Brexit.
The Gibraltar delegation will be completed by the Attorney General, Michael Llamas, and the Chief Secretary, Glendon Martínez.
The meetings will focus on the state of negotiations for the treaty and come after the last negotiating round between the EU and the United Kingdom (the fifteenth) which concluded at the end of January without an agreement.
In November 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Jose Manuel Albaresstated that the Governments of the United Kingdom and Spain were close to reaching an agreement on the status of the colony, while the Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Fabián Picardo, maintained in his New Year message that “the question of the future relationship of Gibraltar with the EU” would be resolved in the first half of 2024 (given the holding of elections to renew the EU institutions).
Gibraltar is not included in the big withdrawal agreement agreed by Brussels and London in 2020. It requires a separate agreed solution that needs the approval of Spain. This is what is negotiated with the ultimate goal of creating a “zone of shared prosperity” between the two regions and “tear down” the fencewhich would place the controls in the port and the airport Schengen.
The negotiation is carried out on the basis of the so-called New Year’s Eve Agreement, a non-binding but essential pact that Spain and the United Kingdom reached to cement the future treaty, which began to be negotiated in October 2021.
