After almost ten years, Apple is pulling the plug on ‘Project Titan’ and the tech giant is shelving its plans to build an electric car. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency. A large part of the almost 2,000 people who worked on the project would now focus on AI.

It was chief operating officer Jeff Williams who informed the ‘Project Titan’ team of the decision, according to Bloomberg. The employees who are not transferred to the AI department would be fired, but it is unclear how many people will be affected.

The first reports about the iPhone manufacturer’s plans for an electric car appeared in 2015. However, the delivery date of the car, which was supposed to be able to drive fully autonomously, was repeatedly postponed due to various obstacles. For example, top engineer Doug Field, responsible for ‘Project Titan’, resigned in 2021, and there were reports of a lack of consistent vision for the future, internal criticism and too much turnover within the team. Doubts also arose as to whether the self-driving car that Apple originally envisioned would ever become a reality.

It is not surprising that the tech giant is now investing the released budget into AI. Apple is catching up with artificial intelligence – competitor Microsoft, for example, is already much further ahead – and is said to be working on its own AI model with ‘Ajax’.
