European Commission to Analyze Microsoft’s Strategic Investment in French AI Startup Mistral: Latest News

The European Commission will ‘analyze’ Microsoft’s ‘strategic investment’ in the French AI start-up Mistral. A spokesperson told the financial news agency Bloomberg. The investment amounts to approximately 15 million euros.

The investment will give Microsoft partial ownership of Mistral, a competitor to OpenAI. Microsoft has already invested 13 billion euros in that company, so says Bloomberg. Analyzing the investment may ultimately lead to an investigation into the collaboration between Microsoft and Mistral, but that is not necessary. It is unclear what the possible objections would be.

Microsoft announced the deal on Monday. This deal allows Microsoft to use Mistral’s language models for its Azure AI platform. As with the collaboration with OpenAI, Microsoft and Mistral will focus on developing and deploying the next generation large language models. Microsoft and Mistral have not yet responded to the European Commission’s announcement.
