The Dutch grid operator Stedin, which is mainly active in the urbanized Randstad, has called on charging station operators to turn off charging stations for electric cars between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. According to the company, this is necessary to relieve the overcrowded power grid during those hours.

The call applies especially in urban areas. Between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM, people come home from work and turn on all kinds of devices, creating a high demand for electricity, according to the grid operator. “We are pulling out all the stops to expand the electricity grid. We will invest at least 8 billion euros until 2030. But that won’t get us there,” says Stedin CEO Koen Bogers. “It is bursting at the seams, especially during the evening peak and on sunny spring and summer days.”
Not everyone has to charge their car around dinner time, it sounds. This is also possible at other times of the day, for example when there is a lot of solar power available or at night when the grid is quieter.
There were previously reports in the Netherlands about thousands of companies that are on a waiting list to be connected to the electricity grid.
