The Line: Saudi Arabia’s Futuristic Megacity Project Sparks Controversy and Excitement Worldwide

Jakarta

Megacity project The Line in Saudi Arabia has drawn sharp attention. Futuristic city splitting the desert is considered controversial.

The Line became a skyscraper that broke down barriers in the Arabian Desert and stretched along the coast of the Red Sea and is now the center of world attention. However, not everyone agrees with the mathematical approach applied.

As reported by Arabian Business, Tuesday (27/2/2024) this megacity project, which is included in Neom’s development plans, surprised many parties with its design of two mathematically separate buildings. Critics expressed concerns over structural stability and the need for better integration between The Line’s two main sections.

In this context, some mathematicians and engineers criticized the project, stating that mathematical separation could create significant technical challenges. They underscore the need for a reassessment of the design to ensure structural safety and optimal performance.

Despite this controversy, The Line remains part of Neom’s ambitious project, which is being dubbed the city of the future. The project is designed to be a sustainable megacity with innovative concepts, including zero-emission mobility and a focus on residents’ well-being.

The Line at Neom is expected to not only become an icon of futuristic architecture, but also become a benchmark for the development of future cities around the world. Regarding this project, Saudi Arabia is trying to create facilities that are equipped with the latest technology, and offer an environment that supports human life and the surrounding nature. Thus, this project is not just about physical development, but also about creating an innovative and sustainable ecosystem.

This city design also emphasizes special lanes for pedestrians and bicycles that are separate from motorized vehicle lanes, so that residents can move safely and comfortably throughout the city. Implementation of The Line project will be carried out in stages, and the initial stage is scheduled for completion in 2025. At that stage, investment of around USD 100 billion (Rp. 1,566.3 trillion) will be allocated, with the hope of creating more than 380,000 new job opportunities.

Different from conventional city layouts, The Line is designed as a linear city, where all structures and facilities are located along one long straight line. The project will cover an area of 95% of Neom’s territory, and will be approximately 170 km long.

Although criticism of the mathematical aspects of this project is still being discussed, The Line remains a project that attracts world attention. This skyscraper stretching in the middle of the Saudi Arabian Desert may be a milestone in the development of the city of the future, bringing new hopes and challenges to the future of global architecture.
