The number of stolen vehicles is on the rise again in France in 2023 with more than 70,000 cases reported, including 44,000 cars. This represents 11% more compared to the previous year for an average of 200 flights per day. The figures published by the GIE Argos (Group of French insurers for the identification and return of stolen vehicles) thus show that the Renault Clio IV is the most popular model.
An increase in thefts which will have an impact on insurance
With 2,738 thefts referenced, the Renault Clio IV is at the head of the most stolen models in France. This classification is not trivial, since this figure will be taken into account in calculating the cost of car insurance. In fact, the loss rate of this city car from the diamond brand will irremediably increase, increasing the amount of the contribution. Companies must in fact adjust their technical provisions.
The Renault Mégane IV and the Peugeot 3008 II complete the podium of vehicles stolen in 2023 with 1,297 and 1,181 thefts respectively. A utility vehicle also appears in the top 10, namely the Renault Master III which has suffered 934 thefts. These figures are partly explained by the popularity of these models among drivers. More than four million copies of the Clio IV have been sold.

Bouches-du-Rhône: the department most at risk
The figures published by the GIE Argos also highlight the distribution of harm. Bouches-du-Rhône thus finds itself at the head of the departments which record the greatest number of thefts. The departments of Île-de-France come next, with in particular Val-d’Oise which is at the top of the Ile-de-France territory. Corsica and Loire-Atlantique are also classified among the most at risk.
70% of car thefts occur without break-ins and use jamming and electronic hijacking techniques.
To protect yourself, a few simple precautions are enough.
At home, it is therefore advisable to store the keys in an aluminum box to prevent thieves from picking up the signals. When closing the doors, you will also need to ensure that the latches are correctly positioned.
The jammers actually block the closure. The thugs then just need to connect to the OBD to start the car.
To remember :
- More than 70,000 vehicle thefts were recorded in 2023.
- The Renault Clio IV is the most refined model.
- Bouches-du-Rhône is at the head of the departments which record the most thefts.
