Electric Renault 5 Revealed at Modestly Attended Geneva Motor Show

The renewed Geneva motor show will show live several newly introduced novelties and even reveal one, the electric Renault 5. Nevertheless, the participation of car companies is very modest compared to the pre-covid years.

It has been five years since the once most important European motor show last took place at its traditional location, the Palexpo exhibition center in Geneva, Switzerland. I visited it then, unaware that the 2020 coronavirus pandemic would cancel it just hours before its doors were to open to the press.

However, after huge financial losses and attempts to move him to Dubai, he returns in 2024 – but it is difficult to deliver “in full force”. Instead of the former four halls full of novelties, two are occupied, and three quarters of one is occupied by an exhibition of iconic cars from a century and recent history.

When I enter the exhibition grounds just a few minutes after the main gate opens, the crowds of journalists I remember from the pre-Covid days are nowhere to be found. Everywhere – the Geneva Motor Show doesn’t remember – a lot of space in which the present representatives of the media and dignitaries of car companies easily disappear.

It was already indicated by the report on the participation – the only two major car manufacturers in Europe who came to show their new products are Renault and Dacia. The Romanians brought the new duster and spring, while the French showed the reborn “five”, the electric successor of the Zoe model.

In addition to them, the stand has a few Chinese car manufacturers, such as BYD or MG, and the American Lucid also came to show the Gravity crossover. Other companies present focus on mobility rather than the cars themselves, or they are companies specializing in restomods, such as Erreerre Fuoriserie or Kimera.

Renault in general is quite “on the horse” about this year’s Geneva – in addition to revealing the “five”, it also brought the SUV-coupe Rafale and its electric Scénic won the title of European Car of the Year 2024. Its announcement was the first on the agenda of the press day, which is only one this year.
