A driving school owner from Hardegarijp in Friesland has made himself heard after months of absence. The instructor had been untraceable for some time, while affected students still had lessons due or had missed their driving test.

His driving school specialized in teaching people with autism or ADHD. He left his students and their parents in uncertainty for months. Marcel Bouius from Veenwouden is one of them. He bought a lesson package for 500 euros, but only took one lesson. “After this, his car had to go to the garage. After that happened, I never heard from him again,” he says Omrop Fryslân.

A deaf boy who took lessons for 1,500 euros was unable to take a driving test due to the sudden disappearance of the instructor.

The driving school was deregistered from the Chamber of Commerce in June 2023, without the students being informed.

Excuses

The ‘disappeared’ instructor now apologizes. “I thought it would blow over, not knowing that people still owe me money. This did not happen on purpose. Certainly not with the idea: this is a nice way to make money. Looking back, it is terrible how it’s gone,” he says.

The driving school owner says he is busy paying back the victims. Several students have now received their money back, but this does not apply to everyone. “I’m busy compensating for that and seeing who still owes driving lessons,” he says. “To finally just pay that back and apologize.”

The former driving school owner says he has decided to stop as a driving instructor.
