Microsoft has taken a minority stake in Mistral, a French AI startup with a valuation of around 2 billion euros. A year ago, the tech giant invested more than 9 billion euros in ChatGPT maker OpenAI.
Of multi-year deal enables Microsoft to use Mistral’s language models for its Azure AI platform. Similar to the collaboration with OpenAI, Microsoft and Mistral will focus on developing and deploying the next generation of large language models. It has not been disclosed exactly how much Microsoft is investing in Mistral.
Mistral also announced today a new AI model: Mistral Large. This language model should compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4. While previous Mistral language models were mainly open source, this is not the case now. Through the collaboration with Microsoft, Mistral will take a commercial path. In addition, the French start-up is releasing a new chatbot called Le Chat. This is based on various AI models from the company.
