BRATISLAVA – Unexpected news came from the world of downhill skiing. Elite Norwegian skier Ragnhild Mowinckelová has announced that she will definitively end her successful professional career after the end of this season.
One of the most complex female skiers of the current World Cup circuit will hang up her skis at the age of 31. “It was an adventure of a lifetime, but every good thing must come to an end” wrote a sympathetic Northerner on the Instagram social network.
“I’m happy to leave as I see fit, but I’m fully committed to racing until the final in Saalbach. So this isn’t a ‘final goodbye’, it’s just a way for me to say goodbye to the sport I love so much and to the people , who are special to me,” added Mowinckelová.
“I think the eight-year-old Ragnhild would be proud of the thirty-one-year-old Ragnhild. She had dreams that we fulfilled together,” the winner of four World Cup races said in a video link.
So far, she celebrated her last triumph after the January descent in Cortina d’Ampezzo, where the race was marked by many falls. And it is said that the decision matured in her after him. “I’ve reached the point where I can’t give it any more,” she stated.
The native of Molde has been part of the prestigious World Cup series for thirteen years. She participated in three Winter Olympic Games and six World Championships. As one of the few female racers, she excels in three different disciplines – in addition to super-G and downhill, it also performs excellently in giant slalom.
She had to interrupt her career after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee twice in 2019. She subsequently missed the entire 2019/20 season. However, she was able to return to the top competitive level
The extraordinary chapter is closing
Mowinckelová has in her collection two silver medals in giant slalom and downhill from the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. At the World Championships, she won bronze in combined (2019) and giant slalom (2023). In the final cup standings, it finished fourth in the 2021/22 season and was in the Top 10 in the next three seasons.
“An extraordinary chapter is closing. Ragnhild is gracefully walking away from the slopes at the end of the season. Her talent, charisma and bright smile will leave an indelible mark on the world of skiing.
Ragnhild, we wish you endless joy in your next life adventure. Enjoy it,” she sent to her opponent Petra Vlhová via the social network International Ski Federation.
The Norwegian star will next present herself this weekend in front of her home audience in Kvitfjell, where both speed disciplines are on the program.
