Ahn Gyu-baek, Chairman of the Democratic Party’s Strategic Nomination Management Committee, met with reporters after the meeting and made this statement. In Bundang Gap, the strategic constituency designation and nomination were made on the same day. Former President Lee Kwang-jae, a close associate of former President Roh Moo-hyun, was initially preparing to run in Jongno, but declared his support for former President Roh’s son-in-law, lawyer Kwak Sang-eon, and declared that he would not run in Jongno. Former President Lee will face off against incumbent Bundang Gap lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo of the People Power Party in this general election.
Mapo-gap is the constituency of Rep. Noh Woong-rae, who is on trial on bribery charges. Rep. Roh is continuing his hunger strike in the party conference room of the National Assembly in opposition to the designation of strategic constituencies, but the party did not accept this. Lee Ji-eun, a former police officer who was strategically nominated for Mapo Gap, was a talent recruited for the general election and retired after attending a ‘general police meeting’ last year opposing the establishment of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security’s police department. Yeongdeungpo-gap, the constituency of National Assembly Vice Speaker Kim Young-joo, withdrew from the party in protest against the assessment of the bottom 20%, was nominated by former district mayor Chae Hyun-il.
Gwangju Seogu-eul, where Rep. Yang Hyang-ja (New Reform Party) left the party, decided to hold a three-person primary between Democratic Party Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Yang Boon-nam, Rep. Kim Gyeong-man (first-term, proportional), and former Gwangju Metropolitan City Culture and Economy Deputy Mayor Kim Gwang-jin. Chairman Yang, a former prosecutor, has served as chairman of the party’s legal committee since 2022 and has managed the overall judicial risk response of Representative Lee Jae-myung.
The Democratic Party was unable to reach a conclusion on the day regarding Seoul Middle and Seongdong-gap, the constituency of floor leader Hong Ik-pyo, who moved to Seocho-eul, Seoul, and decided to discuss it further on the 27th. There is a dispute within the party over whether former Presidential Chief of Staff Lim Jong-seok should run for election in the Middle and Seongdong Gap. Chairman Ahn Gyu-baek said, “There were many things to consider, and there was in-depth discussion among the committee members,” and “further discussions are needed.” It was also decided on the 27th to discuss the nomination of former Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae, former lawmaker Lee Eon-ju, and former Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission chairman Jeon Hyun-hee, whom Chairman Ahn named as the “three female warriors.”
