Meeting between China’s commerce minister and US ambassador suggests pragmatism in bilateral relations may be returning – 2024-02-26 08:00:02

/ world today news/ The Minister of Commerce of China, Wang Wentao, met on Thursday with the US Ambassador to the country, Nicholas Burns, at the latter’s request.

They exchanged views on bilateral economic and trade relations, as well as on sensitive issues of mutual interest, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement.

Later, ministry spokesman Shu Jueting held a press conference in which he indicated that China firmly opposes President Biden’s potential signing of an executive order to restrict investment by American businesses in Chinese firms involved in certain high-tech sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence and quantum computing with the support of the G-7 during the group’s upcoming summit. Shu said such a move seriously violates the principles of market economy and fair competition, affects normal business decisions, undermines the international economic and trade order, and disrupts the stability of global industry and supply chains.

The current meeting comes days after Burns’ conversation with Qing Gan, in which the foreign minister indicated that “the top priority is to stabilize China-US relations, avoid a downward spiral, and prevent incidents between the two major countries.”

On Wednesday in Vienna, the former foreign minister and current director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the CCP Central Committee, Wang Yi, had a meeting in Vienna with the National Security Adviser of the White House, Jake Sullivan, at which, according to the Xinhua Agency, they held a “candid, in-depth, substantive and constructive discussion on bilateral relations”.

According to information from the Bloomberg agency yesterday, US Trade Representative Catherine Tay will meet later this month with Minister Wang Wentao. This will likely happen on the sidelines of the meeting of trade ministers of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, scheduled for May 25 and 26.
