Proposed Rumba District in Cali City Center Sparks Economic Potential and Job Growth

Taking into account the proliferation of nighttime entertainment venues that have opened in the center of Cali, the Council proposed that this area of the city be considered a rumba district.

“Rumba is what generates the most employment after commerce, and I think we have to strengthen there to be able to reach those 100,000 jobs that the Municipal Administration has proposed,” commented councilor Edison Giraldo.

According to the lobbyist, in Cali there has almost always been a negative conception of the rumba due to the noise, but taking advantage of the fact that few people live in the center, this sector could be used to provide a better economy for the city and the people of Cali.

“The idea is to know how to guarantee mixed services and make it a mixed-use space, hopefully purely commercial, especially in the part that goes from the Bulevard to the Plaza de Caicedo, where no people live, and there you can have a great potential,” added Giraldo.

It should be remembered that in the center of the city there are several world-renowned rumba establishments, such as La Pérgola, which is currently the best nightclub in Colombia and is among the best 100 worldwide.

Manuel Pineda, president of Asobares, Valle Chapter, considers the proposal interesting, to the point that the center not only has life during the day, but is also visited by Cali residents at night.

The director of Asobares indicated that the proposal is positive for many sectors in the city and that it causes enthusiasm, to the point that they want to start with studies and possible pilot plans.

“We have to create a working group with the Mayor’s Office itself, also with the help of the community, the authorities, carrying out studies, doing pilots, reviewing the entire issue. We dream of a 24-hour Cali,” added Pineda.

In this regard, the directors of Zorro Azul, one of the night establishments located in front of the Plaza de Cayzedo, believed that these establishments provide a different vision of the city center, because at night it is desolate and sometimes, very insecure.

Due to the above, the establishment commented that security is one of the aspects where the most would have to be invested in order for this dream of the center to be a rumba district to come true.
