Broadcast on TFX this Sunday, February 25, “Charlie’s Angels” by Elizabeth Banks did not have the expected success, with 73 million dollars in revenue in 2019. Enough to bury any sequel project?
Sixteen years after the trio Cameron Diaz – Drew Barrymore – Lucy Liu (and we will cast a modest veil over this attempt at a series reboot canceled after eight episodes in 2011), Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska have become the new Charlie’s Angels. In a feature film directed by Elizabeth Banks.
On paper, the feature film broadcast this Sunday, February 25 on TFX had everything to please, and the first images show that the actresses had fun making it. Except that Kristen Stewart recently revealed that this was not her case, in an interview given to Variety in January: “I hated making this film”she declares, admitting to having felt guilty towards the previous trio (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu), to whom she has great admiration.
And it’s not the box office that has lessened this feeling: produced for $48 million (excluding marketing costs), Charlie’s Angels grossed 73.3 worldwide at the end of 2019. Including 17.8 in UNITED STATES. Which is obviously too little when the idea was to relaunch the franchise with this origin story against the backdrop of cutting-edge technology capable of threatening the world in the wrong hands.
Funny drama
For her part, Elizabeth Banks does not regret the film itself: “I love it when Kristen Stewart is funny and bright. I loved introducing Ella Balinska to the world. I loved filming with Patrick Stewartit was an incredible experience”she declared to the New York Times in September 2022. “But it was also very stressful, partly because as soon as a woman tries to do something in Hollywood, it turns into this story.”
“There was this idea that the Charlie’s Angels that I was creating would be a feminist manifesto. While I was just making an action film (…) I would have liked the film not to be presented only for girls, because I didn’t do it just for girls. In my opinion, the marketing was disconnected from the content.”
“I take full responsibility for Charlie’s Angels”
From there to saying that she blames others, there is only one step that we will not take. And neither does she: “I take full responsibility for Charlie’s Angels – and no one else did. It was all put on my back and I happily accepted it, because what else am I supposed to do?”; she admitted to Variety in February 2023, when Crazy Bear was released.
In these circumstances, and the fate of the franchise seemed sealed from its complicated start at the American box office, there is a greater chance of seeing a new reboot than a sequel, never mentioned in just under five years. Even a third part of the adventures of Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. This means we shouldn’t expect to see Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska together again. Or in another film.
