The number of reports to the Babboe cargo bike reporting point has more than doubled in the past two days. On Friday, more than three thousand people reported as victims, the count now stands at 6,300.
The reporters include more than a hundred childcare companies or childminders, says law firm Birkway, which launched the reporting center on Friday. On the website bakfietsclaim.nl, the law firm makes an inventory of how many victims there are and what problems they experience.
The reports come not only from the Netherlands, but also from France and Germany, among others. “The media coverage is limited abroad and the site is now only available in Dutch, but that does not deter every foreigner,” says Birkway.
According to the law firm, some victims leave a message about the defects in their cargo bikes. For example, a victim reported that a fire broke out while charging the battery of the cargo bike. Many reporters are also said to have leased a bicycle and are faced with ongoing payment obligations, while the broken bicycle is in the shed.
In recent years, Babboe has received many reports of broken frames, according to research by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) and RTL News. The cargo bike manufacturer was forced to withdraw the cargo bikes from the market last Wednesday by the NVWA because they are not safe enough. The company also had to recall cargo bikes with a serious safety risk.
In the near future, the law firm wants to contact victims about what problems they experience with the cargo bikes.
