Since the start of the war in Ukraine two years ago, 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky said this at a press conference on Sunday.
It is the first official death toll of Ukrainian soldiers in more than a year, the news agency writes Reuters. At the end of 2022, a Zelensky aide said that 13,000 soldiers had been killed to date. On February 24 of that year, the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
Zelensky said he could not make public the number of wounded Ukrainian soldiers. That could help the Russians with their military planning, Zelensky believes.
The United States and Russia estimate the number of Ukrainian soldiers killed at between 100,000 and 300,000. That is not correct, according to Zelensky. “But every loss is big for us,” the Ukrainian president said.
Russia does not publish official figures on military deaths. The British Ministry of Defense said on Saturday that around 350,000 Russian soldiers have been injured or killed in the war with Ukraine. The independent Russian online media Mediazona in Medusa on Saturday they estimated that 75,000 Russians had been killed.
