Kalbe City Council Faces Decision on Volunteer Compensation: Impact on Firefighters and Local Officials

To the heart. – The city council, local mayor, fire chief and many other people who volunteer for the unified community of Kalbe receive compensation from the municipality. The amount is regulated for each function in the statutes. This paper was submitted to the Kalbens city council for a vote on Thursday evening.

At the beginning of the meeting, Karsten Klingbeil (CDU) requested that the agenda item be deleted. He pointed out that it was decided in advance to discuss the statutes in the responsible specialist committee.

Head of the department Manuela Dietrich-Beckers explained to the city councilors why the decision should be made that evening. The municipal supervision of the Altmarkkreis criticized the Kalbens statutes because they were confusing due to several amendment decisions. The city administration has therefore revised the statutes. There were no changes to the amount of compensation. If the city council does not adopt the newly written statutes that evening, the municipal supervisory authority has announced that it will object to the statutes. “That would mean that no one would receive compensation for expenses for the time being,” said Dietrich-Beckers, making the explosive situation clear – firefighters would then go to work at private expense. This statement made it clear to the city councilors that the decision that evening was unavoidable.

However, the committee insisted on discussing the amount of expense allowances at the earliest possible date. Manuela Dietrich-Beckers agreed to find out about this from the local authority supervisory authority. Karsten Klingbeil’s application was rejected and the revised statutes were approved by the city council.

In principle, Karsten Klingbeil sees a need to adjust expense allowances, especially among fire departments. “This is also a sign of the appreciation of volunteer work,” emphasizes Klingbeil. From his point of view, it also makes sense for the incumbent city council to deal with the amount of the amounts so that the new city council, who will be elected on June 9th, does not have to deal with this issue straight away.

Kalbe pays its firefighters less compared to Gardelegen. A local fire chief in the neighboring municipality receives at least 60 euros, and a child and youth officer also receives 60 euros.

Another example are the local mayors. The lowest amount a local boss receives is 154 euros, which increases over several levels to up to 389 euros.
