The 22-year-old Wesam from the Gaza Strip died, under unclear circumstances, on Monday, February 12, at a construction site of a hotel unit in Sisi Lassithiou. Eyewitness testimony overturns the initial accidental death scenario and it appears to be a work-related accident.
The eyewitness, according to a report by neakriti.gr, pointed out that he saw the deceased young man pinned by a wall and stated that the area was cleaned before the Police arrived. “I heard a voice calling for help and I went to help. I saw that he had been flattened by a wall,” said the particular worker.
“We notified him (including the EMS), where we were working, and he came after ten minutes and took the child. It was dead,” added the witness who went on to say that the deceased “worked at the hotel (…). We were colleagues (…). I saw that everyone went and the clerk also went there and they were cleaning the place before the Police came”, he added.
While Wesam’s body remained in the morgue’s refrigerator, and while the EL.AS investigations. and the Labor Inspectorate to ascertain the exact circumstances under which the incident took place were ongoing, the president of the Builders’ Union spoke of a “tragic and suspicious” incident.
“It is not possible for a young person to suddenly be found, inside a construction site, dead (…) The first information spoke of pathological causes. The Inspectorate is still investigating the incident, it has not reached a conclusion, but when the medical examiner’s report comes out and talks about injuries, an accident has indeed occurred… In other words, it is not possible that the injuries were created by themselves,” the president of the Builders’ Union said meaningfully.
“(…) The first information was that there was a work accident, that a wall fell and flattened one of our fellow workers. When the Labor Inspectorate went and from the first information, the Police actually found a new man on a table leaning (….) he may have been transferred and was in another area. What doesn’t change is the fact that one of our fellow human beings lost his life,” emphasized Yiannis Gonianakis in closing.
“He was an unfortunate Palestinian who came here for a day’s wages and lost his life,” said the Deputy Regional Governor of Crete for Social Policy and Solidarity Stelios Borgias, who pointed out that “we are waiting for the findings of the competent authorities because apart from the Labor Inspectorate, apparently he has been involved and the Greek Police”.
The Chronicles
The horrific incident occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 12, inside a construction site, in a hotel unit, in Sissi Lasithiou. As neakriti.gr revealed yesterday, despite what was initially known, the death of the young Palestinian, according to the medical death certificate drawn up by a medical examiner two days after the incident, came from severe body injuries, following an accident.
The 22-year-old Wesam from the Gaza Strip had arrived in Greece and Crete a few months ago, after the “ignition” of war in his homeland, last October, in order to escape death. He had received political asylum in our country.
Announcement of TE Lasithi of the KKE
“Each day, following the tragic death of the 22-year-old Palestinian worker at a hotel construction site in Sisi, new evidence comes to light through media reports that indicate that this is most likely yet another workplace crime in the construction industry.
A fact that becomes even more tragic since it is a refugee from long-suffering Palestine who is being bloodied by the murderous state of Israel with the backs of the USA – NATO – EU and the Greek government.
Here and now let the case be clarified and those responsible for the death of the Palestinian worker be punished.
TE Lasithiou of the KKE calls on workers to organize in their unions and take matters of their lives and health into their own hands. To give a militant response to the government and employers in the strike on February 28 by participating in the strike gatherings in the cities of Lasithi”.
