SYRIZA Conference: How Kasselakis got points – Tsipras defeat, the message – 2024-02-25 13:20:23

Elections are over for SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance after a violent background and after incredible scenes unfolded at the conference, confirming Vima which had announced on Saturday morning with three texts that everything is open as to whether the electoral process will take place.

“The masks have fallen. We are not going to elections” exclaimed Stefanos Kasselakis and after an intense dialogue with Olga Gerovasilis, who had declared herself a candidate for the presidency of the party.

However, the chaos that prevailed immediately after the catalytic statement of St. Kasselakis regarding whether or not there was a vote on three submitted proposals, highlighted the deep divide that now exists in the party.

The first proposal was by St. Kasselakis for immediate election on March 10, i.e. in two weeks. The second was of Olga Gerovasilis for elections in a month. The third proposal, and highly compromising, of Sokratis Famellos, Nikos Pappas and Giorgos Tsipras was: There is no need for a new election of the president.

The conference confirms its confidence in the president Stefanos Kasselakis and instructs the president and the party bodies to go united to the European elections. All bound by the statute for the interests of society. We are reconstituting the Executive Office to process proposals for the transformation of our party.

The conference message

The message of the conference, based on those who were in the room cheering St. Kasselakis, that the confidence in him was fully confirmed. After all, despite the political game with leaked explanations of what happened in the vote, facts are facts.

The bottom line is one: not just the stay of St. Kasselakis in the presidency of the party through a particularly charged and explosive atmosphere, but his dominance in the present phase. Besides, the congress, which is the dominant body as the highest governing body, showed that it did not want elections, but neither did it want a change of leadership.

At the same time, however, the dynamic support of the delegates to St. Kasselakis and the acceptance of the proposal of the three, based on the cards they picked up when asked by the president of the conference Panos Rigas, showed that the exhortation of Alexis Tsipras was not adopted.

The fact that this attitude towards the intervention of the former Prime Minister was recorded, is an important signal for the future and especially for how a significant section of supporters of St. Kasselakis, not the current president and his team, the party’s president for 15 years.

Deep chasm

The last day of the conference on Sunday made it official and the deep divide that exists in the party and the great distance, mental and political, between St. Kasselakis and the central executives. Besides, the president of the party “photographed” them when he pointed with his finger to the first positions where the central executives were and basically accused them of putting the party in a quagmire of introversion and paralysis.

So, it remains to be seen how from now on they will proceed against St. Kasselakis and the central officials who were drafted with Olga Gerovasili. And this because in their discussions, after the intervention of St. Kasselakis that there will be no elections, they insist that there is no such thing as a blank check and everyone is judged and obviously also in the European elections.

On the other hand, the vice-president of the Parliament and deputy of Artas, rose even further politically with her move to accept to enter an election process with St. Kasselakis.

The next battle is ahead and concerns the election of the new Central Committee, the prefectural committees and the Member Organizationsin two weeks and after the emergence of the new Political Secretariat.
