In a new judicial defeat for former President Donald Trump, New York Judge Arthur Engoron denied the former president’s lawyers’ request to delay payment of his $355 million fine in the civil fraud case.
Trump’s defense had asked for a period of 30 more days in order to “protect” the appeal rights of the accused and “guarantee an orderly process after the ruling.”
In response, the New York judge responded via email: “You have not explained, much less justified, any basis for a suspension.”He added: “I am confident that the Appellate Division will protect your appeal rights.”
According to court documents in the case, the original ruling in the lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, It already gave one month to pay the multi-million dollar amount.
James has warned former President Trump that his assets will be confiscated if he does not pay the multimillion-dollar fine. Among the confiscated assets are several emblematic buildings in New York, such as Trump Tower, the Plaza Hotel or the Central Park Carousel.
Given the threat from the prosecutor, some media have speculated on the possibility that Trump will be forced to sell some of his properties to meet the payment, according to the EFE agency.
Trump attacked James again this Thursdaycalling her a “communist” and saying she wants to “destroy” the state of New York.
“This communist seeks to destroy the state of New York with her unconstitutional fine of hundreds of millions of dollars for a perfectly legally obtained and fully repaid loan,” wrote the former president on his Truth Social platform. “I can’t let this happen!”
Engoron ordered Trump to pay a fine of $354.8 million, plus interest, for his role in fraud committed by his family business, the Trump Organization. Likewise, the New York judge prohibited him from operating any business in the state for the next three years, which is a serious blow to his interests in the real estate sector.
