Dahomey, the film by French-Senegalese director Mati Diop, won the most important prize at the Berlin Film Festival on Saturday. The film won the Golden Bear, the award for best film.
The film shows how 26 looted works of art are returned from Paris to the republic of Benin, where Dahomey is now part of. “To rebuild we must first recover, and to recover we must do justice,” Diop said upon receiving the award. Like many other award winners, she called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is at war with Hamas.
The Berlinale traditionally ends with the presentation of the Golden Bear for the best film and the Silver Bears for, among other things, best director, actors and script.
The award for best documentary went to Israeli-Palestinian film No Other Land. This documentary is about filmmaker Basel Adra’s struggle to preserve his village on the West Bank. When receiving the prize, the creator said he was celebrating the win, “but I also find it very difficult to celebrate when tens of thousands of my people are being slaughtered by Israel in Gaza.”
The Silver Bear for best director went to Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Arias for the film Pepe. The Silver Bear for best leading role was won by Sebastian Stan for his role in A Different Manwhich went to Emily Watson for best supporting actress for her role in Small Things Like These. Director Matthias Glasner received a Silver Bear for best screenplay for the film Die.
