New Agreement: Martinair Pilots’ Salaries to Increase by 33% in 2024

Trade union AVV and KLM reached an agreement in principle on Friday for a new collective labor agreement for former Martinair pilots. AVV reported this on Saturday evening. The salary of 150 cargo pilots will increase by 33 percent this year. The pilots will also receive dismissal protection until April 2026.

Wages will rise by 18 percent this year and the pilots will receive a one-off payment of 11 percent as compensation for the years of standstill. They are also entitled to a profit share that is equal to that of the other KLM pilots.

This is expected to result in a wage increase of 33 percent in 2024. Pensions will also increase. The agreement still has to be submitted to the members.

AVV chairman Martin Pikaart speaks of a “fantastic result”. “This allows the pilots to regain confidence in the future. It is also clear that the actions were effective.”

Pikaart especially emphasizes that dismissal protection is important. “This protection is crucial for the pilots. Because training for the newly purchased Airbus aircraft by KLM will start in the first quarter of 2026. In this way we prevent KLM from dismissing a group of pilots again.”

Equal rights

The cargo pilots were fired when Martinair merged with KLM. Years later, they were reinstated by court order. Then they demanded that they be given the same rights and pay as the other pilots. But KLM did not want to do that and was right in court. After this, the pilots decided to go on strike.

The former Martinair cargo pilots have been on strike since February 1 this year. This has now come to an end due to the new agreement in principle.
