The Council of Ministers must have a unified internal and external policy. It is not a question of a competition, but of a state policy that must be convincing and Bulgaria must have predictability in this complex geopolitical situation, former Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neinski said in an interview with NovaNews, commenting on the tremors in the administration against the background of the upcoming rotation.

“I have experience with memoranda, although I signed them as a foreign minister, not as a political leader. But in my opinion, the big problem of this administration is that it started without a clear structure of interaction between the two coalitions. In practice, there is no coalition agreement. What should have been done is that this treaty should have been created at the very beginning of the Euro-Atlantic majority and the government it spawned. Because the most important thing for this majority is that it be reformist. In order for the reforms to be carried out, however, there must be clearly defined responsibilities and commitments. This is also at the root of the problem at the moment. That after 9 months a document is published, which is primarily a memorandum, not a coalition agreement. That is, it is the position of one coalition”, said Neinski on the occasion of Maria Gabriel’s refusal to sign the memorandum proposed by “We continue the change-Democratic Bulgaria”.

In her words, “the most terrible thing is to have foreign policy, and politics in general, with two voices.” “Because we are talking about a Euro-Atlantic majority and a Euro-Atlantic cabinet. This government must have a unified domestic and foreign policy. If we talk about the access of the political forces and the contact with the partners outside – this happens through the political families. This is how European politics is built. It rests on interaction within political families and policy-making within them. That is, the voice of the individual political forces is heard and access is through the political families,” explained Neinski.

And he added: “As for the state policy, it can be only one if we want it to be successful. And in this sense, according to political logic, when there is a coalition agreement between two political formations, regardless of two parties or two coalitions, usually the post of the foreign minister is taken over by a partner. And then, logically, there will be an exchange of these positions. And not within the framework of any agreements, who promised whom, what was promised. And I think that this is extremely bad both internally and externally politically.” .

Neynski also commented on the warning of the honorary chairman of the DPS, Ahmed Dogan, that “a 2-in-1 early election could further destabilize the country and trigger a punitive vote with unforeseen consequences.” “Elections can never be a threat. That is, elections come when trust deficits and internal contradictions cannot be resolved in any other way. That is, we should see elections as an opportunity to solve a problem, not as to create one. What is probably being referred to right now is rather the geopolitical context in which an election would take place. Because the geopolitical situation is extraordinary. 2024 is a year of many elections for the world. There have not been so many in a long time many choices,” she stated.

According to Neinski, “the geopolitical situation, which directly affects us, can cause a kind of punitive vote if political leaders fail to show a clear agenda.” “But destabilization and mistrust can also be caused if the way of governing raises many questions and creates many disappointments. Because it is no secret to anyone that these two coalitions came together under duress, creating this geopolitical majority. They have many differences between them. But this is not a question of competition. This is a question of state policy, which must be convincing and Bulgaria must have predictability in this complex geopolitical situation,” the former foreign minister is emphatic.
