Private universities: The bill is in parliament – Students are escalating the fight – 2024-02-24 08:13:46

At parliament the bill of the Ministry of Education for the establishment was submitted private universities in the country proving once again that the government does not “listen” to society and its reactions student of youth who for weeks have been demonstrating in favor of public and free university education and against the further commercialization of HEIs.

Amid strong reactions from the academic community, it is expected to be introduced to the relevant committee of the Parliament next Tuesday, while it will be discussed in the Plenary of the Parliament on March 7 and will be put to a vote the following day.

Last Thursday, thousands of students in Athens, Thessaloniki and the other cities of the country took to the streets for the umpteenth time, continuing their mobilization against the unconstitutional bill that is coming to put a tombstone on free education in the country.

Likewise, the professors, who warn of the obvious unconstitutionality of the bill and announce that if private universities become the law of the state, then they will appeal against the government at every level and to the Council of State.

New prosecutor’s investigation at AUTH against occupation

In the meantime, the government is escalating the terrorizing operation of the student struggle as a new – the third in a row – prosecutorial investigation was ordered against the squatters at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), which continues to fight against the establishment of private universities.

The new department that is controlled for the student mobilizations is Geology and in fact after an anonymous report to the Prosecutor’s Office of Thessaloniki which caused the criminal investigation. The offenses under consideration are those of disrupting the operation of a public service and unlawful violence.

Two similar preliminaries are already underway for the occupation at the Law School of the same Institution.
