The students continue the mass mobilizations against the private universitiesas they consider that the government’s bill degrades the public character of higher education and not only that.
Specifically, thousands of students took to the streets of Athens, escalating their mobilizations, so that, as they say, the anti-social bill is withdrawn.
The public consultation has ended
For its part, the government continues its planning normally, since as mentioned by Pavlos Marinakis “the public consultation was completed with over 1500 comments which will be taken into account in order to improve the bill, without deviating from its central philosophy”.
Also, the government representative stated that the bill reflects the conditions for the establishment of non-state, non-profit branches of foreign HEIs in Greece, with the strictest criteria of any other country in Europe.
-Each branch must have at least three Faculties, each with at least one first cycle program.
-To offer for each school at least one first cycle program, which has evaluation and certification in the context of the country of origin and is then certified by ETHAAE.
-To have the prescribed teaching staff, administrative and technical staff that ensure the secretarial organization, the organizational planning, the perfection of the facilities.
– The facility must be self-contained with appropriate building infrastructure and logistical equipment, with provisions for secondary facilities within the same prefecture. To be sufficient for the teaching and study of students, to have a functional library, laboratory and research spaces depending on the offered study programs, as well as audio-visual media and an equipped multimedia room with internet access.
All Universities (public and non-state) are evaluated by the National Higher Education Authority.
-The license is granted by decision of the Minister of Education, Religion and Sports, after approval and opinion from ETHAAE and EOPPEP, respectively.
Attack on Nikos Androulakis
At the same time, the government representative attacked PASOK and Nikos Androulakis, stating that “today we listened to the interview of Mr. Androulakis, the President of PASOK – KINAL, and it is perhaps the most characteristic example that proves that Mr. Androulakis is progressive in his words , in practice representative of the most genuine anachronism”.
A little earlier the president of PASOK had stated that he would vote against the Pierrakaki bill, as he said “we want a clean solution to higher education and not commercialization, which undermines a serious non-state non-profit and ultimately the public university”.
