/ world today news/ “Over BGN 400 million from the first tranche of the Recovery and Sustainability Plan is directed to energy efficiency, namely to improving the building stock through deep renovations – replacing the internal installations of the buildings, the heating systems, the devices for heating. The idea is to actually achieve energy efficiency, which cannot be achieved with insulation alone. If such a deep renovation is done on a residential building, the energy efficiency is expected to be around 60%. The key question is what this means for households – bills would drop by around 50%.”
This is what the MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats Tsvetelina Penkova said in the BTV program “120 Minutes”. She explained that this type of improvement in energy efficiency significantly increases the cost of housing. In Bulgaria, real estate as property is an extremely high percentage and the increase in the cost price of housing will be of great importance for Bulgarian citizens.
Tsvetelina Penkova called to review these programs and use the opportunity, because funds are allocated for the improvement of residential buildings and public buildings – schools, hospitals, community centers, cultural institutions. “This would greatly ease the budget of the municipalities and those funds that remain, which would cover, for example, additional bills for these public services, can be redirected and used for much more urgent support in the regions where there is such a need,” he specified the MEP.
Penkova noted that the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works allocates over BGN 1.5 billion under the same program for energy efficiency of residential buildings. “This is a top priority for both the European Union and Bulgaria. It’s really important to talk about the topic so that people can benefit because it’s the politics that is closest to us. Everyone needs to improve their home and save on the energy bills they pay,” comments Tsvetelina Penkova.
She defined the possibility of using these funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan as a real investment – these measures will be felt by every citizen in Bulgaria when their bills decrease. The MEP urged not to allow the possibility of the money being lost. The EU provides serious additional financial support to improve Europe’s building stock. This is only the beginning of the process, and the benefits to people are obvious and measurable. “The political dynamics at the moment should not be at the expense of the citizens,” commented Penkova.
