The Minister of National Education, Nicole Belloubet, went this Friday to theFurstenberger primary school in Mulhouse. She came to discuss with the teaching staff as part of the implementation of the shock of knowledge and the generalization of the Singapore method from the next school year for learning mathematics and primary.
A method based on a triptych
In this Mulhouse school, the so-called “Singapore” method has been in place for four years already. Sitting at the back of the class, Nicole Belloubet watches a mathematics lesson from a CP class. To solve the problem of the day, the teacher provides students with equipment. Paper plates, laminated images, tokens, cubes, rulers, a different way of approaching the material. “There is a large place given to manipulation“explains Meral Uruk, the teacher.

This teaching approach is based on a triptych: manipulate, verbalize, abstract. The professor also emphasizes that “verbalization is also very important, what do we learn? How do we do ? How did I think? The objective is tobring students to awareness what they learn and understand how they arrive at abstraction.
The establishment, classified REP+, has split CP classes. The teacher recognizes it, it’s simpler with around ten children to supervise and the results are there “evaluations show that there is added value in terms of acquired assets at student levels”explains Sophie Dufour, the school director.
To train in this new way of teaching which should arrive at the next school year in primary schools, Nicole Belloubet announced two-day training “offered to all CP and CE1 teachers” next June.

No job cuts
During this trip, the Minister of National Education also mentioned budget cuts recently taken into account. In a government decree announced ten billion euros in savings, including nearly 700 million euros allocated to National Educationa loss of resources which raises fears of a loss of jobs.
“There will be no job cutsand the jobs we need to implement the reforms will be there”, insists the minister. With the introduction of the “shock of knowledge” at the start of the school year and middle school level groups in French and mathematics, the minister assures “we will have the positionswe will also have to look for teachers to put them in these positions.” She adds in passing that there will be recruitment of contractual staff.
Budget cuts to national education therefore do not affect employment, according to the minister. **These are credits “put aside” which are used during the year if the ministry must face “particular or exceptional shocks”. The minister wants to be reassuring, “the school is protected“, she says. In the ten billion euros, national education contributes up to 0.5%.
