Since the French are automatically qualified as Olympic hosts, the German national team still has one last opportunity to qualify for the Summer Games in Paris (July 26th to August 11th).
Last chance now against the Netherlands
To do this, the European vice-champions would have to win next Wednesday’s game for third place in the Nations League against the Netherlands, which lost 3-0 to Spain in the other semi-final. During Karchaoui’s penalty kick, goalkeeper Merle Frohms had her hand on the ball, but it ended up in the net. By bringing in Däbritz, Jule Brand and Sydney Lohmann in the second half, Hrubesch tried to turn the game around.
Bad luck for Popp
Popp initially missed the equalizer by hitting the crossbar, which Gwinn then scored with a penalty. The ball had previously bounced to Amandine Henry’s hand, as the video evidence revealed.
