Emotional Departure: Family Bids Farewell in A House Full of Emigrates

Linda is visibly affected when the moving van with all the belongings of the nine-member family leaves for Luxembourg. “You really close a chapter in the Netherlands. It is quite exciting to start something new abroad. We couldn’t go back, but now you literally see: you really can’t go back, those things are now gone Very strange. My baby photo albums, everything is in there. Very special.”

Linda sheds tears when handing over the keys. Also because not the entire family is moving with you. “I think I was saddest last night when Quinten and Sam were so sad,” she sobs about the emotional last dinner with the whole family before departure. Her two eldest sons – one continues to live with his biological mother and the other moves in with his girlfriend’s parents – remain in the Netherlands. “You’ll leave that behind,” said the sad mother. “I found that much more difficult than a house.”

Fortunately, once in Luxembourg, Linda is doing better. “Never to go back,” Ivan jokingly toasts with a bottle of wine. “We’ll soon run away from here screaming with all the work we still have to do,” laughs Linda. The parents decide to ‘have a blast’ with their campsite.

A House Full of Emigrates can be seen every Friday at 9:30 PM on KRO-NCRV on NPO 1 and you can look back here. You can watch the episodes ahead via NPO Start.
