With an idiosyncratic tactic and with a constant “massage” to the farmers, through the repetition of the position that “their demands are fair, but the fiscal margins are narrow”, the government essentially… co-organized their coordinated presence in the Constitution on Tuesday afternoon.
From the consultations with the Police, who accompanied and led the phalanx of tractors to the Constitution to the emphatic cultivation of the feeling that the mobilizations are justified and have popular acceptance, the aim was to avoid a head-on conflict and let appeasement prevail.
The lure that seems to have been devised is that the Prime Minister will take advantage of farmers’ reactions to the new CAP, which coincide with what is happening in other European countries, in order to start a new debate on its realistic adjustment.
This element also coincides with the joint initiative of the countries of the European south in this direction, in view of the European elections and the period that will follow.
Despite this, for the Greek case, the great issue of the reconstruction and productive reconstruction of Thessaly is pending, which is expected to continue to be a thorn.
However, it is clear that at the present time a peculiar balance has been reached. On the one hand, the government wants to avoid uncontrolled conflict and on the other, the farmers seem to avoid – at least at this stage – extreme forms of reaction, in order to maintain a minimum level of acceptance and legitimacy of their mobilizations.
