Dronten Woman Launches Campaign for Neighbor with Brain damage from Meningitis – Help Sabrina Telkamp Get a Covered Mobility Scooter

Ingrid Roffelsen-Meijer from Dronten has started a campaign for her former neighbor Sabrina Telkamp. The 43-year-old from Dronten suffered permanent brain damage two years ago due to meningitis. Ingrid wants to raise money so that Sabrina can buy a covered mobility scooter. This way she can normally take her child to school or run an errand.

At the end of 2022, Sabrina Telkamp contracted bacterial meningitis due to streptococci. She became completely deaf, has difficulty seeing and suffered from balance disorders. She went through a tough rehabilitation process. After more than two and a half weeks she was allowed to go home. She should actually have to recuperate in the Kolorama clinic for the deaf and visually impaired (Nijmegen), but she could do that at home.

Step forward

She was very tired and sensitive to stimuli, but her vision seemed to be improving gradually. Her hearing did not improve – she remained completely deaf. After a few weeks, she therefore received cochlear implants (ci), an operation with a recovery time of four to six weeks. Then the process started to be able to listen to her again. In mid-August last year she walked a short distance without a walker for the first time. In the meantime, the examinations continued and Sabrina worked hard on her rehabilitation: learning to walk better, see better and learn to hear again. Her vision slowly improved. In addition to meningitis, Sabrina also had blood poisoning and a small cerebral infarction. Almost four months after she became ill, the neurologist is positively surprised by her progress. The neurologist expects that if the recovery continues like this, everything will be fine, except for her hearing.

Nice ride

Ingrid Roffelsen-Meijer: ‘Sabrina has her life at home pretty well on track, but going outside is only possible when the weather is nice. Her head remains sensitive and therefore it is not possible to go outside in rain or wind. She is dependent on other people. I wish Sabrina her freedom back and that she is not dependent on others and can simply do what is so normal for us: taking her child to school or running errands. The solution would be a nice covered mobility scooter.’

Anyone who wants to contribute can do so here doing.
