The US Republican Party has already almost completely switched to the pro-Russian position of Donald Trump. Many Republicans hate and fear him, but are forced to endure, seeing in him the most reliable chance to regain control of the White House, the magazine writes Time.
The publication notes that for years, Republicans have treated Trump’s “adoration of Putin” as something to be ignored or grudgingly tolerated. However, now the situation has changed, and the entire party either publicly shares Trump’s position or silently tolerates it.
“Trump’s position as an apologist for Russia and the position of the Republican Party are essentially the same; it is a dynamic that has enormous consequences around the world,” writes Time, citing in particular the Russian seizure of Avdiivka as an indirect consequence of the Republicans blocking aid to Ukraine.

However, some Republicans are still ready to publicly oppose Trump. The loudest voice here is his main rival in the fight for the status of US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, Nikki Haley. She advocates immediate aid to Ukraine and criticizes Trump for his approaches to foreign and domestic policy.
“Of course, many of the same politicians who now publicly support Trump are privately afraid of him. They know what a disaster he has been and will be for our party. They are simply too afraid to say it out loud,” Haley said.
Time notes that Trump has a personal grudge against Vladimir Zelensky and, possibly, Ukraine as a whole due to the fact that on the eve of the 2020 presidential elections in the United States, the Ukrainian leader did not succumb to blackmail and refused then-President Trump to open a criminal case against his son Joe Biden – Hunter. According to the authors of the publication, Republicans are ready to sacrifice Ukraine precisely because Trump has personal scores to settle with it.
Trump against aid to Ukraine
As UNIAN wrote, Donald Trump has repeatedly opposed the supply of weapons to Ukraine, citing either the lack of weapons or money from the United States, the need to end the war as soon as possible, or the threat of a global nuclear war.
Trump has also repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine as soon as he returns to the White House. He usually avoids going into detail about exactly how he plans to end the war. However, last summer, Trump made a careless statement, from which it directly follows that he wants to give Putin the entire occupied territory of Ukraine, if not more.
In this context, the Republicans’ constant blocking of new military aid to Ukraine seems quite understandable.
