The American space agency NASA is looking for four candidates to spend a year in a simulation of life on Mars, writes CNN.
The mission is called CHAPEA 2 (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog), or Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog Expedition.
Starting in the spring of 2025, volunteers will be able to spend 12 months at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The area of the new “home” is 160 square meters, 110 of which are covered with sand.
This is the second such mission – the crew of the first one is still there and they are already halfway through their 378-day stay.
The purpose of the simulator is to prepare future explorers for the Red Planet, where the environment is harsh and resources are limited. One of the biggest challenges astronauts would face on a mission to Mars is the prolonged isolation, as well as the delay of communication with Earth of up to 22 minutes each way.
Volunteers will maintain and develop life in the simulator during their stay. They will take part in simulated space walks, perform robotic operations, take care of the place by planting and growing plants.
The simulator will even simulate the 22-minute delay in the connection with Earth, and the experience will be documented periodically with pictures of life on the artificial Mars.
The position is paid, but there are serious requirements – applicants must be US citizens between the ages of 30 and 55, speak perfect English and have a master’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
It also requires at least two years of work experience, a minimum of one thousand hours of piloting aircraft, or two years of work toward a doctoral program in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
There are 4 more skills that NASA calls “expeditionary” and require applicants to:
– Self and team care – includes monitoring both yourself and your teammates for signs of mental and physical fatigue
– Cultural literacy – the USA is important, and it performs at a high level in international cooperation
– Management and executive qualities – knowing when and how to lead and when to follow
– Teamwork and quality communication skills
