Collapse in gold mine in Venezuela leaves dozens of people trapped – Diario La Página – 2024-02-23 10:25:39

Dozens of people were trapped after a collapse in a gold mine in the state of Bolívar, in southern Venezuela, local media reported.

The landslide occurred on Tuesday at the “Bulla Loca” mine, in La Paragua, in the Angostura municipality of Bolívar state, about 800 kilometers southeast of Caracas.

The mayor of the Angostura municipality, Yorgi Arciniega, assured that some 50 or 70 people would be trapped, according to a publication on the La Patilla portal, which also confirmed that the deployment of authorities to carry out investigations and rescue operations began.

Edgar Colina, Secretary of Citizen Security of the Bolívar state governorate, confirmed the accident to local media Radio Fe y Alegría Noticias, but did not offer details about the number of people who were in the mine.

Videos posted on social networks show moments in which rescued people are seen being transferred on improvised stretchers made of boards.

At least two mines collapsed at the end of last year also in the state of Bolívar. At least 10 people died in one of the accidents.

Last year, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) of Venezuela deployed several operations against “criminal gangs” and illegal mining in the border states of Bolívar and Amazonas, an area rich in natural resources, where the presence of Colombian irregular groups has been reported. and Brazilian garimpeiros.
