Stanislav Markélov and Anastasia Babúrova (2009)

Lawyer Stanislav Markélov and the journalist from the opposition newspaper «Nóvaya gazeta» Anastasia Baburova were murdered in Moscow in January 2009.

A popular jury found two ultranationalists guilty of the murder, who They shot the lawyer and the journalist in the middle of the street, when they were leaving a press conference in the center of the Russian capital.

Natalia Estemirova (2009)

Human rights activist and contributor to Novaya Gazette, Estemírova was found dead near a road in the North Caucasian republic of Ingushetia in July 2009.

The journalist was investigating kidnappings, summary executions, torture and other abuses against civilians in the Caucasus and, specifically, in Chechnya, where she earned the enmity of the Chechen leader Kadyrov.

Kadyrov sued one of the directors of the human rights organization Memorial, for which Estemirova worked, for holding him responsible for her death.

Boris Nemtsov (2015)

Nemtsov, former deputy prime minister and then opposition leaderwas murdered in front of the Kremlin walls in February 2015.
