FDA Approves Revolutionary Drug Xolair for Severe Food Allergies: NPR

The FDA (Federal Agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services) has approved a revolutionary drug for the treatment of severe food allergies, including those to milk, eggs and nuts, writes NPR.

Xolair is the first drug of its kind approved by the FDA to protect against multiple food allergies, offering hope to millions of Americans affected by these conditions. Unlike traditional allergy treatments, Xolair is not used during an allergic reaction, but is taken regularly to reduce the risk of reactions over time.

Developed by Genentech and Novartis, Xolair comes with common side effects such as fever and injection site reactions, but also with a risk of triggering anaphylaxis.

However, repeated use has shown promise in helping patients better tolerate allergies, according to clinical trials sponsored by the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Although it will not completely eliminate food allergies, Xolair can significantly reduce their impact on patients’ health, allowing them to consume small amounts of allergenic foods without severe symptoms. About one in 16 US adults suffer from food allergies, and the approval of Xolair represents a major advance in allergy treatment.

However, its high cost, ranging from $2,900 to $5,000 per month, could pose challenges for some patients, although insurance coverage could help mitigate this expense. Despite these challenges, Xolair offers new hope for people living with severe food allergies, offering a path to better management and an improved quality of life.
