Now the princess has died in her native Rome at the age of 83, as the Italian news agency Ansa reports.
Wedding at 15 years old
Ira von Fürstenberg was born in 1940 into the Rome of the upper ten thousand. Her father Tassilo von Fürstenberg belonged to the nobility, her mother Claire Jeanne Agnelli comes from the Fiat dynasty. It couldn’t be more Italian!
As a teenager she became a celebrity and Lolita femme fatale. When she was only 15, she married Alfonso zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, who was then 31 years old.
Your wedding? A sensation: 200 gondolas rode on the Grand Canal, and more than a thousand guests from the European nobility and nobility traveled to Venice. Habsburg, Bismarck, Hanover, Onassis – it is questionable whether there would ever be such a high-profile guest list again after that.
Glamorous jack of all trades
But the dazzling wedding was already the highlight of their marriage. “After that, our life together lost its shine,” Ira von Fürstenberg later recalled, according to “Bunte”. After five years and two sons, the marriage was annulled. In 1961 Ira dared to go to the altar again. Her husband: the Brazilian entrepreneur Francisco Pignatari. But this marriage only lasted three years.
Afterwards, Ira proved that she can stroll through life stylishly and successfully even without a husband: she modeled all over the world and showed her acting talent in international film productions. As a fashion icon of the 1960s and 70s, she was an indispensable part of the tabloid press.
Ira – the prevented Princess of Monaco?
Ira von Fürstenberg had the international jet set firmly under control. The list of her friends and acquaintances reads like a who’s who of the glamor scene. One of her closest confidants? Prince Rainier III – or was there even more?
The two were said to have a liaison. In 2019, the princess explained to the French magazine “Point de Vue” how things began between her and the Grace Kelly widower: “In 1985, Prince Rainier was alone. Our deep friendship brought us closer.”
“Bunte” reporter Paul Huhner revealed in 2005 on the ZDF program “People Today” that Ira von Fürstenberg really almost became a princess: At that time, Alfonso von Hohenlohe told him personally that his ex-wife had received a marriage proposal from Rainier, but she was unsure whether she should accept. Her ex’s advice: “You won’t find anything better.”
And in fact, years later, Ira von Fürstenberg herself revealed on the Sat.1 show “Palastgehisper” that she could have succeeded Grace Kelly – if she had wanted to.
What finally stopped them? The Royal House of Monaco has never officially commented on the love affair. And Ira von Fürstenberg also takes this secret to her grave…
