Lindley Johnson, Lead Program Executive for the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, assures us that there are formal procedures in place for notifying relevant authorities in case of a serious impact. While he may not have a red phone on his desk like in the movies, the protocols ensure that information reaches the necessary channels promptly.

If the threat extends beyond national borders, IAWN would notify the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs. This collaborative effort emphasizes the global nature of the challenge and the need for international coordination in safeguarding our planet.

It is worth noting that NASA’s early detection capabilities significantly reduce the likelihood of needing public alerts. As long as NASA remains vigilant and identifies potential threats well in advance, we can avoid the need for last-minute warnings that leave us with little time to react.
