Two Men Charged with Murder in Kansas City Super Bowl Parade Shooting
The city of Kansas City was left shaken last week after a deadly shooting took place during the Super Bowl victory parade. Now, two men have been charged with murder in connection to the tragic incident that claimed the life of a woman and left 22 others injured. The shooting, which police believe stemmed from an argument between the two men, has shocked the community and sparked concerns about gun violence in the United States.
The charged men have been identified as Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays. Both men were shot and wounded during the incident, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation. Last week, two teenagers were also charged with resisting arrest and gun violations in relation to the shooting. However, Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker of Jackson County clarified during a press conference that the charges against Miller and Mays were separate and more severe. They have been charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
According to Ms. Peters Baker, Mays was the one who initiated the argument at the event and drew a handgun. Other individuals at the scene also brandished firearms, including Miller, who prosecutors believe is responsible for shooting and killing Lisa Lopez Galvan. The two suspects are currently being held on a $1 million bond and are receiving medical treatment in hospital for their injuries.
The family of Ms. Lopez Galvan expressed gratitude for the arrest of the two suspects, stating, “Though it does not bring back our beloved Lisa, it is comforting to know that the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims, those who had to witness this tragedy unfold and the Kansas City community.”
The incident that led to the shooting allegedly began with a verbal altercation between Mays and four individuals who asked him what he was looking at. Surveillance footage shows Mays approaching the group aggressively and pointing at them in an angry manner before drawing his weapon. He later told the police that he hesitated to shoot because there were children present, but began firing after hearing a threat from someone in the rival group. Miller initially claimed that he was attempting to flee when he was shot, but recanted his statement when confronted with video evidence. He admitted to firing his weapon multiple times, one of which struck Ms. Lopez Galvan.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and Ms. Peters Baker emphasized that additional charges may follow. “We seek to hold every shooter accountable for their actions on that day – every single one,” she stated. “So while we’re not there yet on every single individual, we’re going to get there.”
The incident at the Kansas City Super Bowl parade is not an isolated event. Sadly, shootings have marred sports celebrations across the United States in recent years. In June of last year, a shooting at a celebration for the Denver Nuggets NBA team left 10 people injured, including two individuals who were charged in connection to the incident.
