Supreme Court Upholds New York’s Rent Stabilization Laws, Elected Officials and Tenant Advocates React

After the United States Supreme Court handed down its decision on New York’s rent stabilization system on Tuesday, elected officials and tenant advocates expressed their satisfaction with the decision.

The Supreme Court announced that it will not accept two challenges to rent stabilization by New York City landlords.

Cea Weaver, campaign coordinator for Housing Justice for All, said: “Today [por ayer] The United States Supreme Court has confirmed what we have always known: rent stabilization is here to stay. For decades, New York’s rent stabilization system has kept hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in their homes, even as market pressures increase.”

Governor Kathy Hochul said that rent stabilization laws “remain some of our state’s most powerful tools to fight inequality, preserve affordability and keep New Yorkers safely housed in their own communities.”

Mayor Eric Adams also said: “For 50 years, rents have been kept affordable for millions of New Yorkers and their families. Today, tenants can breathe a sigh of relief. “As this administration addresses the city’s affordability crisis from every angle, we remain committed to upholding New York’s rent stabilization laws so renters can afford to remain in their homes and communities.”

In a joint statement, Legal Aid, Legal Services NYC and Selendy Gay PLLC said: “The United States Supreme Court’s decision to decline to review the Second Circuit’s well-reasoned dismissals of these lawsuits is consistent with precedent. well-established and puts an end to these cases that attack the legal protections that one million New York households depend on in the midst of an ongoing housing crisis.”

At least one million households are covered under the rent-controlled law in New York.
